A new dinosaur was discovered this month by paleontologists Robert S. H. Smyth, David M. Martill, Eberhard Frey, Hector E. Rivera-Silva and Norbert Lenz in Crato, Brazil. The dinosaur was named Ubirajara jubatus; Ubirajara means “lord of the spear”’ in local Tupi Indigenous language, and jubatus comes from Latin and it means mane or crest. This carnivorous dinosaur was found intact with feathers and ribbons and rods made of keratin that protrude from the shoulders. The fossil dates back to about 110 million years ago in the Aptian age and is a part of the compsognathus group, which branched off of carnivorous dinosaurs early in the history of the group. Other dinosaurs without feathers have been found in the Crato Formation in Brazil, but have all ended up in Germany which upsets some of the local paleontologists.
Questions:
Why is this discovery so important?
Do you think that fossils should stay in the country/area they were found?
What do you think the dinosaur used the feathers and ribbons for?

I do think that fossils should stay in the country/ area they were found because I do not think their is a reason to take them if we are able to replicate the fossils we should let the country be able to have the fossil and showcase it in their own country because that can help with things like tourism.

DeleteThis discovery was so important, because this fossil shows that dinosaurs may have had feathers, while we originally thought they had scales. Feathers and ribbons were likely used to camouflage depending on the color or to attract mates. I think that there should be some fossils left where they are found, however, moving some fossils around is important to teach other regions about the discovery.

This discovery is important because this can help us understand what dinosaur's looked like aside from the scaly leathery skin. I think Fossils should stay where they are found so the environment and rock structure could be found. And I think the feathers could have been to attract mates and scare of predators.

This discovery is so important because it has proven a debated topic true, that some dinosaurs did indeed have feathers. It was all a debated fact whether or not dinosaurs had feather many people said no just because they're image had always been that of the original idea of a dino; while other argued that we cant be sure because we had only ever found bones nothing that hinted to the outside look of a dinosaur.

The fossils should stay in the countries they are found in because it doesn't make sense for other countries to take them away. The fossils are found there for a reason, and scientists who are from that country may have more extensive knowledge on the land history and could pick up on certain things a foreign scientist could not.

I think that fossils stay relatively close to the area the dinosaur resided in and the layers of the earth that the fossils were buried in can also give a lot of information about the time period they died in. This discovery is important because it gives us more information about the conditions of the early earth and possibly even evolutionary mechanisms. -Shirin Saha
ReplyDeleteThis discovery is important because it confirmed what many paleontologists thought; that dinosaurs had feathers. I agree with the comments above that the fossils should for the most part stay where they are found, and if fossils are to be taken from the country it needs to be a mutual agreement between the locals and the ones taking the fossil away.

I do think fossils should stay in the country they are found in because then people will know the land history or want to look it up. I really like this topic because when I was younger I could name all the dinosaurs and could sit around for hours and watch stuff about them.
