Your zooniverse project notes

Which Zooniverse project did you choose to look into?  Would you recommend it to your classmates to join in or not and why?

Think about these questions:  was it easy to use or confusing?  were the tasks straightforward or difficult?  was it interesting or too boring?

  1. I looked into the Iguana from Above Zooniverse. I would recommend it to my classmates, although there were not a lot of iguanas found it is beneficial work, it is low commitment, and it has the feel of a puzzle. The software was easy to use, however, some photos were blurry which could lead to some confusion on what you are seeing. The tasks were straightforward, however, I found it difficult to distinguish male and female iguanas. It was interesting to make observations, however, the majority of images consist only of rocks.

  2. I looked into the Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout, I would not recommend this to my classmates because it is boring and repetitive. Their was information that was interesting but the classifying game is boring. The game was straightforward but never told you if you were right or wrong, It would be more interesting and educational if they labeled they types of galaxies. In conclusion the whole thing was boring.

  3. I looked into Plant Letters, I would recommend this as it was very interesting to see what kinds of plants where used and talked about from centuries ago. IT was a little hard to figure out what was going on in the letters as some are in different languages without translation, but the people in the discussion board are helpful to guide you along, I think if there where better translations and etc. it would be easier to navigate. All together I do still think this is very interesting and recommend!

  4. The second I looked at was the Etch A Cell - VR, I would recommend it because it it is very informational and its interesting and fun. It was pretty easy when you got the hang of if and they do explain the tasks pretty straightforward.

  5. I did the OceanEYES Zooniverse. I would not recommend it because it became boring pretty fast and at times was difficult. The images I was given, I would say over 50% of them were blank and there was nothing for me to identify. On the flipside, when I was given an image of fishes, it was a very large amount and it was hard to distinguish the fish from one another. I did like how the instructions were clear, the tasks were straightforward but actually doing them was difficult. Overall, it was a cool project but I wouldn't necessarily recommend.

  6. I did the Beluga Bits Zooniverse. I wouldn't recommend it because it was boring and when you classified the Beluga as male or female it wouldn't tell you if it was right or not. The instructions were clear, so when I got images that didn't show the underside of the whale, I could click unsure or skip it. But overall it was pretty boring, but it was cool learning how to distinguish a male Beluga from a female.

  7. I did the Weddell Seal count Zooniverse. I wouldn't recommend this project because although it had a positive background and reasoning behind it, it was very repetitive and not engaging. This being said the instructions were clear and simple, there was no confusion when getting the data of the seals count.

  8. I chose the Project Plumage one on Zooniverse. The task was to outline different birds in photographs that were taken at a museum so that the plumage of the birds can be sectioned off and analyzed by researchers. The task was easy and engaging; It was pretty fun for me! -Shirin Saha
