Strict new guidelines lay out a path to heritable human gene editing

Wow Gene editing is still socially unacceptable there are scientists and organizations creating guidelines to keep open the door for Gene editing for when gene editing is socially accepted. There will be strict guidelines as to how gene editing can be performed so people won’t create super babies. There is a fear that people will have scientists create super babies for them and will make them super smart, athletic so there’s a thing where even sports committees have to be able to keep a lookout so gene edited babies don’t be super athletic and give them an unfair advantage. When gene editing does become accepted it’s going to be strictly for diseases that can cause people a lot of harm and just suffering in life. We are able to do Jean everything and animals perfectly but the thing is humans require more of a focus because the human gene is more difficult to change. They want to make sure that gene editing is safe enough that it won’t affect future generations too badly because there is some editing that has been done on adults but they were adults and they did not affect the future generations and if you're what happens when we change an embryo. This might not happen since almost most of the countries have laws against genetic editing.
https://www.sciencenews.org/article/human-germline-gene-editing-crispr-strict-new-guidelinesWhat would you be worried about with gene editing? What's your opinion?
Do you think this would stop human evolution? How do you think it would affect it?
Is there anything you would change about your genes if you could?
Do you think gene editing will become socially accepted?
I do think that there are issues with gene editing and how it could affect those with modifications vs those who aren't. It would disrupt evolution in humans for sure but we could combat that by dealing with what needs to be modified. And lastly I would personally edit my genes if I could to remove any chances of future health conditions. Thanks for presenting- Tyler A.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the ethics behind genetics is very interesting! This could potentially throw off evolution by introducing new genes to the gene pool and change the ratio at which certain genes are present. I don't think that gene editing will become socially acceptable in cases where it is not medically necessary, due to society's awareness of the potential issues, and the reaction to the HIV resistant modification last year. I would be worried that genetic modification is occurring without government oversight. I watched a documentary about genetic modification, and this made me realize that access to genetic technology is not very well regulated, allowing some people to use genetic technology in their homes without regulation.

I would be worried that gene editing would fall into the wrong hands. I feel like even having government regulation on it is risky too. My issue with the concept of designer babies is that it feels like we are disturbing nature too much and in a sense playing "God" (when it comes to choosing eye color, sex, etc.) . In theory, if gene editing was used strictly for editing genes to prevent genetic disorders/health problems I think it's a good idea, again the issue would be regulating it. ReplyDeleteThere are issues with gene editing. When I attended the CRISPR event they were actually talking about how gene editing is not perfect and sometimes the protein does this thing called off targeting editing and it edits the wrong part of the genome. So that's pretty scary, I do see gene editing becoming more accepted, but I have a feeling that it's going to become some kind of political issue when it shouldn't be. I think that gene editing shouldn't be used for stupid stuff like eye color or nose size, but just the important stuff like diseases.
ReplyDeleteI have never understood the viewpoint of people who don't agree with gene editing for diseases. Obviously editing an embryo's genes to make it more attractive. athletic, or intelligent would be wrong but there are things like plastic surgery and steroids that do those same things. I feel as though we should definitely increase research about gene editing for diseases.

i would be worried that it would result in something similar to the movie "GATTACA" where people were discriminated against based on genetics. I dont think it would "stop" human evolution, it would stop the natural aspect but we would still be "evolving", just artificially. I personally couldn't think of anything to change about my genes off the top of my head. as for alteration of genes becoming socially accepted, i think it probably would become acceptable in the medical sense of aiding people with genetic predispositions to diseases and disorders, although i think editing the genes of your children would be a bit far. - Nathan Clark
ReplyDeleteI don't see a problem with gene editing but this particaulr one is kind of crazy. Creating babies to be super athletic is already unfair so I didn't understand when it was saying people have to be on the lookout not give them unfair advantages. Thanks for presenting.
