A study was done from 1996-2021 to determine the number of heat waves per year in rivers and streams around the U.S. It was determined that there were about 4,000 heat waves during the study in total. In 1996 there were only 82 but in 2021 there were 128. These heat waves are becoming more of a problem because some of the animals/organisms in the rivers and streams can’t handle the heat. The warmer water could cause the animals not to get enough oxygen and make it difficult to regulate their body temperatures. It is also said that warmer water could increase how quickly chemical reactions can happen and spread.
