Dogs can tell when we are stressed. There was a study done where they took sweat and breath samples and show them to dogs and see if dogs can tell the difference just by the smell. And it showed that 90% of dogs could which means it was not just based on chance. These dogs can smell the change from sweat and our breath and know if it is stress or not since they have been domesticated and live with humans for so long. There is a change in Volatile Organic Compounds that happen when we are stressed and the change in the odor of our breath and sweat allows dogs to sense it.

Questions

  • Do you think it is just odor or other things-like facial expressions?

  • Do you think other animals would be able to sense stress as well?

  • Do you think that wild dogs would be able to as well or only those that live with humans?
