Plastic-munching ‘superworms’ could be a scalable solution to tackling global waste by Hannah Lee
Scientists have genetically modified super worms to allow them to digest plastic. There’s an enzyme that breaks down the plastic so that the worms can actually live it. The plastic they can digest is polystyrene which is used as takeout packaging and for thermal insulation. Currently scientists are still working on ways to find the best enzyme to digest this plastic effectively and efficiently.
Do you think this could be a long term solution to the plastic problem?
Do you think the plastic problem should worked on so much if the animals will likely evolve to resist the negative effects of plastic in the future.
If it is a viable solution, how might the operation work? For example, would there be giant farms where these worms are cultivated and fed plastic, will they be let out into the word, etc?
