Baby sharks takes a new form in the infamous megalodon sharks! These sharks were predicted

to be 2 meter longs at birth by the examination of a megladons vertebrae. These sharks lived

23-2.5 million years ago, researchers reported January 11th in Historica Biology. Little is

known about the shark’s biology though as its skeleton was made of difficult-to-fossilize

cartilage, so what scientists do know mostly comes from fossilized teeth. Paleobiologist

Kenshu Shimada of DePaul University in Chicago, and colleagues used megalodon

teeth to estimate a total adult body length for the fish of at least 14 meters! Through luck

though Shimada and colleagues had a rare piece of evidence, megalodon vertebrae;

Although shark skeletons are made of cartilage, the backbones are able to become

hardened by deposits of calcium salts, which can then be fossilized. The researchers

used an imaging technique called micro-computed tomography to study three

well-preserved vertebrae from one shark. The images showed 46 growth bands, which

means the shark lived to the age of 46! It is estimated to have been about 9 meters long

at its death, and the size of the bands shows that the shark grew at a rate of about 16

centimeters each year. This caused the researchers to estimate that the shark was

about 2 meters long at birth!

1.) What would life in the sea look like if megalodons were still around?

2.) Do you believe that there's still aquatic animals that we've yet to discover in the

ocean?

3.) What's your favorite ocean animal and why?

  1. It is difficult to predict the complete impacts of having Megalodons around today, but due to their size they would likely be at the top of the food chain taking the place of the current large predators. I do believe that there are aquatic animals that we have yet to discover as the ocean is so large and some organisms can be so small and live in such extreme environments that humans can't directly explore. My favorite ocean animal is a dolphin, due to their great intelligence.

    1. I also think that they would become the top of the food chain, I believe though that they may tip the balance of life if they were still in the ocean today because there would be no other aquatic animal to compete with them. I also love dolphins! They're extremely cute and as you said very smart animals; I also like stingrays and sharks!

  2. I 100% believe their are aquatic animals we have not discovered in the ocean. We have not even explored 50% of the ocean, there are still places in the sea that we can not get to. As technology expands and improve it will be cool to find out what weird things are out there.

  3. I would think sea-life would be somewhat different knowing this huge predator was around so larger sea prey may not be here today, there is a chance there is a lot we haven't discovered the deeper we go due to technological advancement's. And lastly I would have to say clown fish or squids.

  4. There are definitely aquatic animals and even entire species we have yet to discover. I think I heard a statistic saying that only approximately 5% of our oceans have been charted and explored. I've seen pictures of the types of the animals in the deep, deep ocean and they look incredibly cool and weird. It will be interesting to see what we find and how little we actual know about the ocean.

  5. I do believe there are aquatic animals we have not discovered in the ocean yet. The ocean is so big it's hard to think we have seen every animal down there. My favorite ocean animal is sharks. I don't know why I love them but they are really pretty to me. -Alyssa Butts

  6. We've barely explored the ocean because of how dark and how much pressure exists as you go deeper in the ocean. We definitely have aquatic animals that have yet to be discovered, the blobfish a deep sea animal was only discovered in 2003, who knows what else could be down there? I like seals because they're like fat sea dogs, and they're super cute.

  7. The vast majority of the ocean is unexplored so there is absolutely a possibility of new, bizarre life forms existing in the deep sea. I believe that scientists should dedicate more time and technology into exploring our oceans because we know so little. My favorite ocean animal is probably a dolphin. -Shirin Saha
